The mechanism

Blocking by routing, not filtering

Android gives an unrooted app exactly one way to control per-app traffic: the VPN interface. Warden uses it to build a tunnel that goes nowhere.

You decide per app

Allow or block each app — outright, per network (Wi-Fi / mobile), or only during the hours you choose. New apps are blocked by default.

Blocked apps route nowhere

Allowed apps reach the network normally. Blocked apps are routed into a local tunnel with no far end — their traffic is dropped on the device.

You see what was blocked

The history shows the host a blocked app tried to reach — read from the app's own lookup, on your device (Android 10+). Nothing else is recorded.

What Warden is not

Security software earns trust by being clear about its limits. Here are ours, up front.

Not an anonymising VPN.

There is no remote server. Warden doesn't hide your IP, change your location, or carry your traffic anywhere.

Not an ad or tracker blocker.

There is no blocklist and no domain filtering. Warden blocks whole apps, on your instruction.

Not a traffic inspector.

Traffic from apps you allow is never read or modified. Only blocked attempts are recorded (Android 10+).

Some system apps can bypass any third-party VPN routing, and apps using encrypted DNS leave no readable name. We say so in the app, too.

Fair questions

Is Warden a VPN?
It uses Android's VPN interface — the only mechanism an unrooted app has to control per-app traffic — but there is no VPN service behind it. No remote server, no tunnel endpoint. Blocked traffic is dropped on your phone.
Does it collect anything about me?
No. No account, no analytics, no telemetry, no ads. The app makes no network requests of its own. Your rules and the blocked-attempt history live only on your device (history is kept 7 days).
How is it free?
Warden is free and complete. It's supported by an optional in-app tip jar — a one-time thank-you that unlocks nothing.
Will it slow down my phone or battery?
Blocking works by routing, not by inspecting packets, so there's no per-packet processing cost for allowed apps. The service is a lightweight foreground service, as Android requires.
What Android versions are supported?
Android 7.0 and newer. The named blocked-attempt history needs Android 10+ (older versions still block normally — Android only exposes connection attribution from 10 up).
